5 steps to achieve a better work-life balance

One of the biggest problems facing modern man has been and still will be the need to strike a balance between stressful office hours and personal life. The problem is even more acute for those who work in multinationals, where the boundaries between normal working hours, overtime and public holidays are sometimes barely visible. The effects can be overwhelming: you no longer have free time, you can no longer really enjoy life and those around you, and your health is no longer guaranteed.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of five steps you can take to help you regain your personal life and regain control of your free time:

1. Keep an agenda and prioritize what is most important to you

You can start as a distant observer of your regular work week. Write down everything you do that week, whether it’s personal or work-related activities. You will immediately notice how much time you allocate for each and you will be able to indicate with certainty what you would like to look different. Unfortunately, our programs are often the result of habit and run out of inertia – that’s why we need to restart regularly. This exercise gives you the perfect opportunity to reevaluate what is important to you and restore your priorities. Once you have identified them, write them down in the same diary so that you can remember their importance and check them once you have dealt with them.

2. Put health first

Regardless of the field in which you work or the goals you have in life, your health must always come first. If you are not in good physical shape, you will definitely suffer emotionally and mentally. Make sure you don’t skip breakfast, choose healthy foods, run to the gym at least twice a week and remember to sleep at least seven hours every night. Although it may seem counterproductive to add so many extra hours of gym and sleep to your already ultra-busy schedule, the effect will actually be the opposite: the stress level will decrease, the energy level will increase, you will benefit from a better mental clarity and a higher productivity at work.

3. Take care of your personal relationships

Numerous studies have shown over time that relationships with friends, family and loved ones are the ones that fulfill us the most. If you have a very demanding job, which does not leave you enough time to see those close to you, you will notice that both aspects of your life will eventually suffer. You will definitely need to work overtime – it is important not to let this become a habit. As long as you set your relationship with friends and family as a priority, your focus and productivity at work will improve.

4. Make time for yourself

As important as your relationship with others and your health is, it is just as important to set aside time just for yourself. A time when nothing else matters, and your needs come to the fore again. Each of us has specific activities that help us relax, reconnect with ourselves and enjoy life again. Whether it’s accessing a spiritual source, a painting session or a long bath and personal care, set aside at least half an hour a day for these activities. The effects will be felt immediately and will be so strong that you will slowly build a routine that you will not want to part with.

5. Call for help whenever you need it

Unfortunately, we live in a society that often presses us to hide our feelings and limitations, forcing us to suffer in silence and loneliness. If you are stressed by life in the corporation and the tasks that never end, do not hesitate to call for help as soon as you feel the need. Whether you are a spiritual guide, a psychotherapist or a business coach, it is important not to overlook this step – on the contrary, you risk that the stress will become chronic along the way and you will later reach a deadlock that is really difficult to overcome.

Finally, you just have to remember that important changes do not necessarily come as a result of radical measures. On the contrary, you will benefit just as much by implementing in small steps any of the strategies mentioned above. Start with a clear goal, after which you can add another and so on. With such an approach of small steps, the change and acquisition of a better balance between professional and personal life will come almost unnoticed.
